Writing Persuasive Ad Copy

Whether it’s direct mail, an online ad, or a spot in your local newspaper, an advertisement is a great chance to speak to potential customers. Here are nine ways to make sure you say the right thing...

Whatever the medium — a direct mail piece, an online ad, or even a spot in your local newspaper — you need to make sure your message is clear, concise and understood by your target audience.   These tips help establish your credibility and make your ad stand out among the crowd.
1.    Publish a picture of yourself. This will show people that you’re not hiding behind your desk — and you’re not afraid to back up your product.
2.    Refer to any famous or respected people who have purchased your product.  Even better, solicit their testimonials and include those, too. These people should be well known to your target audience.
3.    Publish the results of any tests your product has passed. The fact that your product may have passed a durability test, safety test or quality test, for example, will boost your product’s credibility.
4.    Publish the results of any positive surveys you’ve done with your customers.

5.    List any publications that have written about your business. It could be a product review, a top-ten list, an article, etc. If you’re advertising online, provide a link to the article.

6.    List any related books that you’ve written. By publicizing any book you’ve written, you position yourself as an expert.

7.    Include your website address — and make sure the site looks professional and up-to-date. If people visit your site and it looks unprofessional, they will relate that to your product.

8.    Offer a money-back guarantee. This will remove the risk from your potential customers and show them that you stand behind your product.

9.    Provide testimonials from satisfied customers. The testimonials should include specific and believable benefits your customers have received.

Last but not least, be sure to get the input of a marketing professional.
